WHEELING, W.Va. - The No. 15 ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team suffered a 114-107 upset loss Saturday afternoon at Wheeling.
The Cardinals (4-14, 2-10) stormed out of the halftime break building up a 19-point lead with 9:34 to play. The Hilltoppers (15-3, 10-2) were able to chip away and get the game back within single digits (99-90) with just under four minutes left but could not get closer than seven, which came in the final 15 seconds.Â
Bryce Butler scored 25 points and pulled in nine rebounds to lead five double-digit scorers for West Liberty.
Steve Cannady netted a season-high 22 points and drained four of WLU's 14 three pointers.
Zach Rasile scored 12 points, seven from the free throw line, while
Christian Montague and
Ben Sarson scored 11 apiece.Â
All eight Hilltoppers that saw action scored at least eight points, pulled down multiple rebounds, dished out an assist, and made a three pointer.Â
West Liberty scored 10 straight points to go ahead 21-11 seven minutes into the game, but Wheeling was quick to respond and took a two-point lead (54-52) into halftime after an opening 20 minutes that saw seven lead changes and 10 ties.
Senior John Korte led all scorers with 40 points for Wheeling. The Cardinals shot 62.5% (40-64) from the floor and 52.2% (12-23) from beyond the arc in the game.
West Liberty will be back in action Wednesday against Davis & Elkins at 7:30 pm inside the ASRC.
