WHEELING, W.Va. - The West Liberty University men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 defeat this evening at Wheeling University in a Mountain East Conference rivalry match.
Wheeling took the lid off the scoring in the 26th minute and the goals came one after another, with three more over the ensuing 22 minutes to chalk up the match early. The Cardinals added 34th and 44th minute goals making it 3-0 at the break. A quick goal three minutes into the second half put Wheeling up 4-0, then a final insurance goal was tallied with just over 15 minutes left in the match.
Jamie Redmond had four of West Liberty's seven shots, tying a game-high. The lone on goal shots for WLU came from
Vitor Otsuka and
Alex Anderson with one apiece. All four of Redmond's shots came in the first half and both shots on goal were in the second half.
The Hilltoppers had to go a man down for the fourth time this season after
Noah Underwood was carded out of the game in the 57th minute.
Colton Callen saw his first action of the year in net after the card, he made a save and allowed a goal over 32-plus minutes.
Today was the first edition of the newest Regan Bowl. WLU Head Coach
Sean Regan faced off against his brother Brandon, who took over head coaching duties at Wheeling this season after his father retired last year after 39 seasons and 500+ wins.
West Liberty finishes its four-game road trip with a 1 pm kickoff at Notre Dame College this Sunday.
