GREENSBURG, Pa. - The West Liberty University women's soccer team dropped its season opener, 2-0, to Seton Hill this evening at DICK's Sporting Goods Field in Greensburg, Pa.
It was a defensive battle that saw a lot of the action battled out in the middle third.
The Griffins capitalized on the first shot of the game and found the back of the net five minutes into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. The goal came off a one timer that was set up by a lofted pass over the Hilltopper defense out of the corner.
Zara Wickert made a diving save on the next shot four minutes later, but after that there were not many chances on either side as the defenses locked in. The freshman made five saves and played all 90 minutes in the opening match.
In the 75th minute, a turnover in the defensive end for the Hilltoppers led to a Seton Hill goal to extend its lead to 2-0.
WLU could not get past the strong defense of Seton Hill, only mustering three shots and one on net which came off the foot of
Rileigh Gualtiere.
West Liberty will host Salem for its home opener on September 3 at West Family Athletic Complex. The match is slated for a 1 pm start.
