Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Victory in Home Opener

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's soccer team opened its home schedule with a 2-0 win over Salem this afternoon at West Family Athletic Complex.

The Hilltoppers controlled the time of possession throughout the match. Multiple chances were had and two shots went off the post before West Liberty was finally able to break through late in the second half.

Anne Williams took advantage of a misstep by the Tigers keeper inside the six-yard box to put West Liberty up 1-0 in the 75th minute. The goal was the first of the season for the Black and Gold, who donned the home white kit today.

Amelia Compston added an insurance goal just before the one minute mark left in the game. She danced her way past defenders inside the box and laced it to the top of the net.

The 'Toppers totaled 17 shots in the match and put 10 on net, while limiting Salem to two and one on goal. Compston led the way with five, four of which coming in the first half.

Zara Wickert had a rather relaxed day in net thanks to the powerful control of the West Liberty attack. Wickert played all 90 minutes between the posts and made the only save chance she got to earn the clean sheet.

22 Hilltoppers saw action today in the home opener.

West Liberty heads into conference play for its next match. Notre Dame College will visit West Family Athletic Complex on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
