Salem Tennis No Match for Hilltopper Women

4/15/2022 6:32:00 PM

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The regionally-ranked West Liberty University women's tennis team made short work of Atlantic Region non-conference foe Salem (W.Va.) on Friday, breezing to a 7-0 shutout in a morning match at Washington Park.
Coach Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (10-4) were in control throughout against the short-handed Tigers (3-12), who had only four players available for Friday's match.
Emma Arnal and Daria Shchoma rolled to a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles with Nathalia Valencia and Jacqueline Pena-Aceves pitching a 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point.
West Liberty swept all four singles matches, as well. Evelina Martirosyan was forced into a tiebreaker for the win at No. 1 singles but Arnal, Gemma Cliffe and Ishika Agarwal delivered straight-set wins at 2, 3 and 4 singles to complete the sweep.
Ranked No. 5 in the latest set of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, the Hilltoppers travel to West Virginia State on Tuesday for a match with crucial Mountain East Conference and regional implications.
