WHEELING, W.Va. – Two nationally-ranked teams meet for the third time this season tonight when No. 2 West Liberty takes on No. 23 Fairmont State in a Mountain East Conference Tournament semifinal. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. inside WesBanco Arena.
Both teams dodged upset bullets on Saturday. Coach
Ben Howlett's Hilltoppers (27-2) were tied with Wheeling midway through the second half before pulling away to an 89-81 win.
Pat Robinson III topped WLU with 22 points while
Bryce Butler added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Falcons (23-6) escaped with a 67-65 win when a late Notre Dame rally fell short. Freshman George Mangas led all scorers with a game-high 22 points while Isaiah Sanders added 18 points and 9 rebounds.
The WLU-Fairmont winner advances to Sunday's 5 p.m. championship game against the winner of tonight's late semifinal between No. 2 seed Charleston (23-6) and No. 7 seed Alderson Broaddus (14-15), which shocked regionally-ranked West Virginia State, 95-87, in Friday's quarterfinal round. Hilltopper fans can follow the Black and Gold throughout the MEC Tournament by logging onto the conference's Tournament Central page. Each game is being live streamed with play-by-play commentary.
