WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team had no trouble maintaining its perfect Mountain East Conference record on Tuesday, coasting to a 7-0 shutout of Fairmont State on the indoor courts at Wheeling Park.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (7-3, 3-0) jumped on the Falcons (4-4, 0-1) from the opening serve, earning the doubles point with ease in a 3-0 sweep.
Emma Arnal and
Evelina Martirosyan took a 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles while the No. 2 tandem of
Gemma Cliffe and
Daria Shchoma and the No. 3 doubles pair of
Nathalia Valencia and Jacqueline Pena-Aceves each posted 6-1 victories.
The Black and Gold swept all six singles matches, as well. Cliffe had to bounce back after dropping the opening set of her No. 3 singles match by a 6-1 count but proved more than equal to the task, taking the final two sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
The first set of Arnal's match at No. 1 singles went into a tiebreaker but the Hilltopper freshman survived the challenge, eking out an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker and completing the straight-set win with a 6-3 nod in the second set.
The Black and Gold step out of conference play on Saturday with a noon match at Indiana (Pa.) University.
