Women's Soccer Silenced by Fairmont State

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's soccer team was held to just three shots and one on goal in a 2-0 loss to Fairmont State this afternoon at West Family Athletic Complex.

The Hilltoppers fall to 4-6-1 and 3-5-1 in the Mountain East Conference, while the Falcons improve to 6-2-3 overall and 6-2-2 in MEC play.

On Fairmont State's first shot on goal of the day in the 25th minute, they scored lofting the ball over the outstretched arms of 'Topper keeper Zara Wickert.

A quick turn of events after the Falcons cleared out a Hilltopper free kick in the first minute of the second half led to a breakaway goal for the Maroon and White. Lesbia Alejandra Puetro Sorto won the one-on-one battle with Wickert firing it inside the right post to put Fairmont State ahead by two.

Jori Alexander had the lone shot on goal for WLU, which came in the 54th minute. Rileigh Gualtiere's shot with five minutes left was blocked and Claire Kelly picked up the only first-half shot for the Black and Gold in the 4th minute.

The Falcons dominated time of possession and ended the day with 18 shots, but only put four on goal and scored on half of them.

West Liberty will be back in action on Wednesday with a road trip to Frostburg State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
