INSTITUTE, W.Va. - West Virginia State broke a scoreless battle in the 67th minute to take down the West Liberty University women's soccer team this evening at Dickerson Stadium.
The Hilltopper defense fended off 16 first-half shots from the Yellow Jackets (10-0-1, 8-0-1) to keep the match scoreless at the break.
Zara Wickert made seven saves in the opening 45 minutes to lead the defense and finished with nine, a tie of her season-high.
West Liberty (4-5-1, 3-4-1) came back with a strong second half and won the shot battle 8-6 after not getting one off in the first half.
Amelia Compston fired three attempts with two on goal, while
Isabella Bankovich was credited with two shots, both on goal.
The Jackets quickly developed the game-winner in the 67th minute with a pass into the six-yard box to the MEC's leading goal scorer, Fran Soares-Cupertino, who one-timed it to the back of the net.
The narrow score margin led to a physical second half. The final 11 minutes featured three yellow cards, two of which were charged to WVSU.
West Liberty returns home for its next match on Sunday versus Fairmont State. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm from West Family Athletic Complex.
