WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University men's soccer team lost its first non-conference match of the season, 2-0, to California (Pa.) this evening at West Family Athletic Complex.
The Vulcans (2-6-1) got on the board five minutes into the match with an early penalty kick goal after the Hilltoppers (1-8-2) were charged with a foul in the box.
Noah Underwood got a hand on it, but could not keep the Chance Pursifull PK out of the net.
Joseph Fonagy leaked out in front of the Cal back line in the 29th minute for the 'Toppers best chance of the first half, but missed wide left.
West Liberty kept the shot count close with eight to the Vulcans 10, but could not put the chances on net. The Hilltoppers got their first shot on goal in the second half from
Rhys Lewis from 40 yards out and the only other came in the 78th minute from
Mark Donnelly, whose one-on-one battle was knocked away by the Vulcan keeper.
California (Pa.) added an insurance goal in the 75th minute off a header inside the six-yard box that was snuck inside the far post after a chip shot pass lofted over the Hilltopper defense.
Vitor Otsuka led seven shot takers for WLU with two attempts.
West Liberty will be back on the home turf on Sunday to take on nationally-ranked Davis & Elkins. Kickoff is slated for 1 pm from West Family Athletic Complex.
