WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University women's soccer team fired 15 shots, but was unable to get one in the back of the net resulting in a 1-0 loss to visiting West Virginia Wesleyan this afternoon at West Family Athletic Complex.
The teams combined for 15Â first-half shots, eight by the Hilltoppers and seven by the Bobcats, but there was no score at the break.
Zara Wickert picked up four of her five saves in the opening 45 minutes, while all five of the 'Toppers on goal shots were swallowed up by the Wesleyan keeper.
The Bobcats struck under a minute into the second half on a quickly-developed, one-timer at the top of the six-yard box. They were able to hold that lead the rest of the way.
West Liberty put up similar shot numbers in the second half, but could not find the frame on any of the seven attempts. The Hilltoppers played with a player advantage for the majority of the second half and a 11-on-9 scenario for the final 14 minutes after a second Bobcat red card, but could not capitalize.
Amelia Compston recorded five shots with three on target and one off the crossbar to lead the Hilltoppers,
Elinor Jansson added three attempts.
The final week of the regular season is on deck for West Liberty. First, a trip to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, then the finale at home on Saturday versus Wheeling. Kickoff from Elkins, W.Va. is set for 5 pm for the midweek contest.
