WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University volleyball team avenged its Mountain East Conference opening loss to Notre Dame in late September with a convincing 3-0 sweep on its home court this evening.
The Hilltoppers did not trail in either of the first two sets and then ran away with the third set after a late 5-0 run to earn the straight set win. West Liberty started strong scoring first all three times, including the first three points in sets one and two.Â
Kirsten Bogunovich recorded her third straight double-double with a match-high 11 kills and 15 assists. The senior leader also had six digs and a pair of blocks.
Notre Dame battled within one-point four times in the opening set, but WLU was able fend off each comeback attempt to hold the lead. The Black and Gold recorded five of the last six points to win it 25-19 and go up 1-0.
West Liberty scored six straight points in the middle of set two and never looked back on way to a convincing 25-15 win. The relentless Hilltopper defense held the Falcons to a -0.081 hitting percentage in the second set.
Trailing 15-14 in the third set, WLU put together five consecutive rally wins and finished off the sweep, 25-19.
Riley Cudnik added 10 kills to the Hilltopper attack and made five blocks to lead the defense, which kept NDC to its lowest hitting percentage in an MEC match, at .036. Freshman
Liv McAtee added four blocks, while
Nyia Setla and
Kaija Sydlowski posted double-digit digs on the back line with 16 and 10, respectively.Â
WLU Volleyball celebrated Dig Pink Night this evening inside the ASRC. Proceeds raised from the event benefitted the
SideOut Foundation.
West Liberty is set to visit Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan this weekend on Friday and Saturday. First serves are slated for 7 pm on Friday and 11 am on Saturday.
