FROSTBURG, Md. - The West Liberty University men's soccer team had an offensive break out night with four goals in a draw at Frostburg State this evening.
Joseph Fonagy netted two goals in a five minute span to quickly erase a two goal deficit and lead the Hilltoppers to an important point in the Mountain East Conference standings. Fonagy dribbled to the endline in the 55th minute and snuck a shot in past three Bobcat defenders to make it a one score game (4-3). Right back at it in the 60th minute, the sophomore forward fielded a throw-in in the box and after a quick turn he laced the game-tying goal to the back of the net. The goals were the first two of the season for Fonagy.
Vitor Otsuka put West Liberty ahead early with a free kick goal from 30 yards out into the top right corner. The Bobcats quickly answered with 9th and 18th minute goals to obtain a 2-1 lead.
Alex Anderson tied things at two off a double assist from Otsuka and
Mark Donnelly in the 29th minute. Otsuka legged a free kick to the top of the six-yard box right and a pair of deflections sent it to the back of the net, first a Donnelly header followed by a ricochet off Anderson's chest.
Frostburg State executed a free kick opportunity from just inside midfield to perfection resulting in an open kick inside the six with less than 20 seconds left in the first half to take the lead into the break. Seven minutes into the second half, the Bobcats extended their lead, but Fonagy shined three minutes later with his back-to-back scores.
Fonagy and Otsuka ended the night with five shots apiece and three on goal to lead all players. The Hilltoppers fired off their most shots in a match this season outshooting Frostburg 17-15 and 9-8 on goal. The Black and Gold also had its most corners in a match this year, with eight.
