WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team got a late goal from senior standout
Kaelyn Oskin here Sunday to finish off a 2-1 comeback win against Alderson Broaddus at the West Family Athletic Complex.
Coach
Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (2-1-0, 1-1-0) found themselves on the short end of a 1-0 tally at halftime as the visiting Battlers (1-2-1, 0-1-1) had picked up a Nataly Chauta goal in the 11
th minute and made that stand up for the rest of the period despite heavy pressure from the hosts.
That pressure paid off in the early moments of the second half when Bella Aperfine directed a header into the bottom left corner of the cage, equalizing the score at 1-1 in the 47
th minute.
West Liberty had forced a corner kick in the opening minute with
Rileigh Gualtiere sending in a quality service from the right corner. Alderson Broaddus keeper Olivia Kqira punched the ball back toward the corner but Gualtiere chested it to the turf and sent it back into the box where Aperfine applied the clinical finish from six yards out.
The Hilltoppers created multiple opportunities throughout the remainder of the half – they outshot the visitors by a 16-5 margin – but didn't get one past Kqira again until less than four minutes remained in regulation.
West Liberty controlled a 50-50 ball on the AB side of midfield and Aperfine sent a quality ball through to a sprinting Oskin as she knifed into the penalty area ahead of her defender. Kqira came off her line to challenge but Oskin slipped the ball just under the diving keeper for the game-winner.
The WLU women hit the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match at Frostburg State.
