PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The West Liberty football team ends a two-week layoff this afternoon when it hits the Mountain East Conference road for a date with Alderson Broaddus.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at 2,500-seat Multi-Sport Performance Stadium on the ABU campus.
Coach
Roger Waialae's Hilltoppers (0-1) haven't played since a turnover-marred 70-7 road loss at defending MEC champion Notre Dame in a March 13 season opener.
The host Battlers (0-1), who are making their MEC football debut this spring, dropped their season opener at home last week in a 34-6 setback against Wheeling.
West Liberty will be running short-handed today as graduate transfer QB
Jack Allison will miss today's game due to an injury suffered in the loss to Notre Dame.
Redshirt freshman QB
Jamie Diven will make his first collegiate start after getting on the field for several series in the season opener. Diven was an All-State quarterback at South Fayette (Pa.) High School who passed for 3,211 yards and 45 TDs as a senior.
Nine Hilltoppers caught at least one pass in the season opener. Walsh transfer WR
Jerome DeVon Harris had 5 catches for 53 yards and a TD to lead the team. True freshman CB
Jason Mitchell was charted with a game-high 9 tackles and added a pass break-up to pace the WLU defense.
While this is the first-ever gridiron meeting between West Liberty and the Battlers, there is a football history between the schools. Alderson Broaddus College, now University, was formed in 1932 from the merger of Alderson Academy and Broaddus College.
West Liberty had a 2-0 record on the field against Alderson Academy, with the last meeting being a 2-0 Hilltopper win in 1929. The Black and Gold also went 3-2 against Broaddus College, closing out the series with a 7-0 win in 1930.
