| By:
GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The unbeaten West Liberty University Acrobatics and Tumbling team scored a school-record 266.395 points and swept all six events Thursday night in an impressive Mountain East Conference win at Glenville State.
Coach Kelsey Kyle's Hilltoppers (3-0) dominated from start to finish, besting the Pioneers (1-2) in 17 of the 19 heats in a convincing 266.395-254.240 triumph at the Waco Center. The 266.395 points are the most scored by any MEC team this season and easily eclipsed the previous WLU school record of 255.720, set earlier this season in a win against Davis & Elkins.
The Black and Gold carried a solid 37.15-35.55 lead out of the Compulsory Event after posting a program-best 9.90 in the Toss heat to go along with a WLU-best 8.30 in the challenging Tumbling heat and never took their foot off the gas.
The Hilltoppers opened up the Acro event with another school-best, a 9.60 in the 5-Element heat, and tacked on scores of 9.10-plus in the final two heats for a 28.30-26.55 Acro Event win.
West Liberty wrapped up the first half with another strong performance in the Pyramid Event to take a 95.050-89.850 lead into halftime. The Hilltoppers recorded a score of 9.80 or better in each of the three heats, including a nearly-perfect 9.95 in the Open Pyramid.
It was more of the same following the 15-minute intermission. The Toss Event was tied after the first two heats but West Liberty delivered another program record – a 9.45 off a 9.60 start value – to win the
The Black and Gold all but put the match on ice when they broke three more program records in the Tumbling Event to push the lead into double figures. Record-setting highlights included an 8.70 in the duo pass, an 8.10 in the trio pass, and a 9.325 in the open pass by senior Lexus Ficca to go up 174.035-164.000.
The Hilltoppers had one more record left in them, blowing past the 90-point mark in the Team Event to put a school-record 92.370 points on the board in the final event of the night.
West Liberty will be back in action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts perennial power Gannon (Pa.) in the only non-conference match of the season. The Golden Knights were ranked No. 5 in the NCATA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
