WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team scored twice in the second half here Friday and cruised to a 2-0 shutout of Ohio County rival Wheeling at the West Family Athletic Complex.
After dominating the run of play for much of the night, Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (1-1-1) broke through in the 63rd minute when
Zayne Brakeall crossed a ball into the box and
Millie Colbrann nodded it past the WU (0-3-0) keeper.
West Liberty added an insurance goal in the 85th minute when a
Cate Calissie cross found
Lexie Mullen in space and Mullen nailed a twisting shot for the final score of the match.
The Hilltoppers outshot the Cardinals by a whopping 17-6 margin with
Claire Valentine delivering three saves in net to earn the shutout win. Jaci Wilson was credited with 5 saves in a losing cause for Wheeling.
The West Liberty women hit the road next week for a Friday night game at West Virginia State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in Institute.
