INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State scored in the waning seconds of regulation Friday night to salvage a 1-1 tie with West Liberty in Mountain East Conference women's soccer match at the Shawnee Sports Complex.
Following a scoreless first half, Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (1-1-2) broke the scoring ice in the 58th minute when
Alyssa Rhinaman finished off an assist from
Millie Colbran for a 1-0 lead.
Just when it appeared West Liberty might make that lone goal stand up, the Yellow Jackets (1-2-1) came up with the equalizer from Megan Maslak with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Neither team put a shot on goal during the two overtime frames, cementing the 1-1 deadlock.
The Hilltoppers had a 12-7 edge in shots and a significant 10-2 advantage in corner kicks on the evening.
Claire Valentine had three saves in net for WLU with Christin Wells stopping a trio of West Liberty shots for the hosts.
The Lady Hilltoppers return home next week for a Friday night match against the University of Charleston. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex.
