LEXINGTON, Ohio – The West Liberty University men's tennis team opened its season here Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 non-conference loss to Ashland University at the Lakewood Racquet Club.
Coach Ron Hulewicz' Hilltoppers found themselves in an early hole as the host Eagles (2-1) swept the three doubles matches by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-0 to claim the doubles point.
The Black and Gold pushed two of the singles matches to three sets but
Zarion Jones was the only West Liberty player to pull out a win, pulling out a 10-8 victory in the tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets with Ashland's Tche Kun Teng at No. 5 singles.
Gianluca Gerndt took a tough three-set loss at No. 3 singles after pulling out a tiebreaker win in the second set to keep the match alive.
Derek Roehner also put up a strong fight at No. 4 singles, falling by scores of 7-6 (6) and 7-5.
The Hilltoppers won't be back in action until March 5 when they host West Virginia State in a Mountain East Conference match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
