WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty University men's tennis returned to the Hilltop on Friday for its first home match since April 2022, hosting Kutztown University at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
The Hilltoppers opened the long-awaited homecoming with doubles play, but Kutztown claimed all three matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles competition.
Siddarth Madhavan and
Ignacio Giurfa battled at No. 1 doubles before falling to Kutztown's Dang Nguyen and Henrique Rocha, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles,
Austin Zgurski and
Jacob Burchfield were defeated by Patrick Young and Nacho Costa, 6-0, while Robert
Lindsey and
Aidan Lucas dropped a 6-0 decision to Luis Lopes and Raphael Hoareau Lebon at No. 3.
Kutztown carried the momentum into singles play, winning all six matches to complete the team victory.
Madhavan competed at No. 1 singles against Nguyen, while Giurfa faced Young at No. 2. Zgurski played Costa at No. 3, with Lindsey meeting Rocha at No. 4. Lucas squared off against Nikita Safonov at No. 5, and Burchfield faced Lopes at No. 6.
Although the Hilltoppers were unable to break into the win column, Friday's match marked a significant moment for the program as West Liberty men's tennis returned to its home courts for the first time in more than four years.
