Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team had its four-match win streak snapped by No. 21-ranked Wheeling in Mountain East Conference North Division action Friday night inside the McDonough Center.
Coach
Riley Schenk's Hilltoppers (4-2) battled the nationally-ranked Cardinals (4-1) on virtually even terms for most of the opening set only to see the hosts pull away late for a 25-19 win.
West Liberty came out strong in the second set, jetting out to a 5-1 lead behind sterling defensive work at the net from
Madison Clayton and
Emily Reedy. Wheeling had the answer, however, reeling off 10 of the next 11 points to take control and never looking back on its way to a decisive 25-14 win.
Leading 2-0, the host Cardinals cranked it up another notch in the third set, hitting an impressive .459 as a team to close things out with another 25-14 decision.
Reedy had a solid match for the Black and Gold with 8 kills and 14 digs.
Kaija Sydlowski added 7 kills with Clayton donating 5 kills and 4 blocks.
Renee Lemke finished with 17 assists while
Nyia Setla (17) and
Katelynn Fritz (15) joined Reedy with double figure digs.
The West Liberty women will be back in the friendly confines of the ASRC on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match against Alderson Broaddus.
