Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hang on Friday night as Wheeling snapped the Black and Gold's six-match winning streak with a 3-1 decision in a battle of regionally-ranked Mountain East Conference rivals at the McDonough Center.
Coach
Riley Schenk's Hilltoppers (20-12, 11-4) gutted out a tough 26-24 victory in the opening set but the Cardinals (23-5, 14-1) evened the match with a 25-16 win in the second set before going up 2-1 with a 25-20 nod in the third set. West Liberty led for most of the fourth set only to see Wheeling score five of the last six points for a 25-23 victory.
Maddie Clayton and
Kirsten Bogunovich formed a lethal 1-2 punch at the net for the Hilltoppers. Clayton had 15 kills and 9 blocks off a .448 hitting percentage while Bogunovich added 13 kills and 7 blocks to go along with 35 assists.
Katelynn Fritz backed the dynamic duo with an 11-kill, 15-dig double-double while
Riley Cudnik also hit double figures with 10 kills.
Reigning MEC Defensive Player of the Week
Nyia Setla chipped in with 32 digs and a pair of service aces.
