WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team battled unbeaten Concord to the wire in Saturday's Senior Day match at West Family Stadium only to come out on the short end of a 1-0 tally.
Coach
Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (6-5-3, 5-4-3) held the high-powered Mountain Lions (11-0-3, 9-0-3) at bay throughout the first 45 minutes and headed into the second half still deadlocked at 0-0.
Concord, which leads the MEC by a wide margin in every offensive category, needed a set piece to break through in the 52nd minute. That's when Yasmin Mosby – the MEC's leading scorer – finished off a well-struck corner kick from Michelle Brogden for what proved to be the only goal of the match.
Despite losing senior goalkeeper
Olivia Montgomery to injury midway through the first half, that was the only mark on an otherwise clean sheet for a West Liberty defense that faced a staggering 25 shots from the Mountain Lions with 14 of them being on frame.
Montgomery had 3 saves before exiting with the injury and
Kaitlyn Taylor came off the bench in relief of her fellow senior to keep WLU in the match the rest of the way with 10 saves.
Taylor and Montgomery along with the rest of West Liberty's soccer seniors –
Sydney Davis,
Grace Fodor,
Juliana Haug,
Lexie Mullen, and
Kaelyn Oskin – were honored in Senior Day ceremonies prior to the match.
Still solidly entrenched in second place in the Mountain East Conference North Division, the Hilltoppers head to Glenville State on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against the Pioneers.
