WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team defeated Frostburg State, 1-0, here Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference North Division match at the West Family Athletic Complex.
It was a revenge win for Coach
Sean Regan's Hilltoppers (5-9-0, 4-8-0), who had dropped a 1-0 decision to the Bobcats (6-6-1, 6-6-0) earlier this season at Frostburg.
The only goal of the tightly-played defensive struggle came in the 67th minute when the Black and Gold capitalized on a Bobcat miscue.
West Liberty was awarded an indirect free kick in the box when the Frostburg keeper was whistled for illegal touching, picking up a ball in the box that had been kicked to him by a teammate.
With the Bobcats forming a defensive wall in the goal mouth,
Liam Toman slid the indirect kick back to
Bernardo Vilchis who fired it into the top right corner of the net from close range.
Frostburg mounted several late surges and even had an apparent game-tying goal waved off by an offsides penalty but WLU goalkeeper
Noah Underwood and the Hilltopper defense stood strong to finish out the win.
The Bobcats outshot the Hilltoppers by a 12-7 margin and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal but Montgomery came through with all 7 saves to earn his third clean sheet of the season.
West Liberty returns to action on Saturday when Concord visits the West Family Athletic Complex. The Hilltoppers' Senior Day match kicks off at 1 p.m.
