WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 shutout of Concord here Saturday afternoon at the West Family Athletic Complex.
Coach
Sean Regan's Hilltoppers (6-9, 5-8) took care of business in a hurry, scoring their two goals in a 30-second span midway through the opening half and holding the Mountain Lions (1-13, 1-11) off the board the rest of the way.
Concord dodged a bullet in the 21st minute when keeper Kyle Brown saved a WLU penalty kick but it proved to be a short-lived reprieve.
Senior
Bernardo Vilchis, who had been turned away empty-handed on the penalty kick, finished off a pretty cross from
Liam Toman for the first score of the match in the 28th minute.
The Hilltoppers got the ball right back following the kickoff and once more powered their way into the Mountain Lion end. This time Toman threaded the needle to
Vitor Otsuka near the penalty spot and Otsuka banged it home just 24 seconds after Vilchis' goal to conclude the scoring.
West Liberty outshot the visitors by a whopping 18-6 margin with WLU keeper
Noah Underwood making 4 saves to earn his second consecutive shutout.
Vilchis and the other five Hilltopper seniors –
Spencer McDonald,
Arun Sankar,
Tyler Swafford,
Drew Theiss and
Mikel Ubeda – were honored in Senior Day ceremonies prior to the match.
West Liberty won't be back in action until Oct. 31 when the Black and Gold head to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. match.
