FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Junior goalkeeper
Olivia Montgomery came up big with a career-high 11 saves and the West Liberty University women's soccer team earned a scoreless draw here Sunday in a Mountain East Conference North Division match at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Montgomery's fourth clean sheet of the season helped Coach
Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (6-3-3, 5-2-3) solidify their hold on second place in the MEC North standings but it didn't come easily.
The host Falcons (3-6-2, 3-5-2), who were looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Black and Gold and climb back up the divisional ladder, outshot West Liberty by a whopping 18-2 margin but couldn't get one past Montgomery.
The Hilltopper net-minder had 5 saves in the first half and charted her final 6 saves in the second 45 minutes. The frustrated hosts, who saw two shots slam off the crossbar in the second half, were unable to put a shot on frame in either of the two extra frames.
West Liberty returns home to host Frostburg State on Wednesday in a meeting of the top two teams in the MEC North. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the West Family Athletic Complex.
