HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team couldn't get anything going against George Mason at the Van De Meer Tennis Center on Monday after coming up short in a hard-fought match against Edinboro (Pa.) on Sunday.
The NCAA Division I Patriots handed the Black and Gold a 7-0 loss on Monday after Edinboro had outlasted WLU by a 5-2 tally on Sunday.
Coach Ron Hulewicz's youthful Hilltoppers had to hit the comeback trail early against the Fighting Scots as Edinboro swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Florent Dulac continued his strong early-season play at No. 1 singles with an impressive 6-1 6-4 romp past Edinboro's No. 1 player, Nils Plutat.
West Liberty also got a win at No. 6 singles from freshman
Zarion Jones but couldn't get over the hump in any of the other matches.
George Mason didn't lose a set in Monday's match but the Black and Gold made their presence felt, especially in singles action.
Joris Gravoulet pushed GMU's Momin Khan to a tiebreaker in the opening set of their No. 3 singles match while
Anton Schulz battled to a 7-5 setback in the second set of his No. 2 singles match. Jones got off to a strong start at No. 6 singles, as well, but couldn't recover from a 7-5 loss in the first set.
The Hilltoppers return to the Van De Meer Center on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match against Kutztown (Pa.).
