BLACKSBURG, Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to 8-time Atlantic Region champion Bluefield State here Friday night at the Virginia Tech Indoor Tennis Center.
The Big Blues took all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Coach Ron Hulewicz's Hilltoppers gutted out a pair of quality wins in singles play but it wasn't enough to pull off the upset.
West Liberty's
Florent Dulac made a big impression, outlasting Bluefield State standout Frederik Bau-Madsen by a 14-12 count in a marathon super-tiebreaker at No. 1 singles after splitting the first two sets by identical 6-2 scores. Bau-Madsen is a former Denmark national juniors champion and member of the Danish National Juniors Team.
Reigning MEC Player of the Week
Anton Schulz also made his presence felt for the Black and Gold, knocking off the Big Blues' Mohamed Belcora in another super-tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. Belcora started for Bluefield State as a true freshman in last year's NCAA Division II national tournament.
Coach Hulewicz and his Hilltoppers begin their Spring Break schedule in Hilton Head, S.C. on Sunday when they take on Edinboro (Pa.) in a 3:15 p.m. match.
