HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 shutout of Kutztown (Pa.) here Tuesday in a non-conference match at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
Coach Ron Hulewicz's regionally-ranked Hilltoppers were in control from the opening serve, sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and breezing to straight set wins in the six singles matches to complete the victory.
West Liberty's No. 1 doubles tandem of
Florent Dulac and
Joris Gravoulet posted a 6-0 win against the Golden Bears' top doubles squad of Benjamin Kelly and Sebastian Arizpe.
Anton Schulz and
Zarion Jones matched that 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles with WLU's No. 2 pairing of
Gianluca Gerndt and
Akira Kawabata coasting to a 6-2 nod.
Joris Gravoulet held off a spirited effort from Kutztown's Arizpe to prevail, 6-4 6-4, at No. 3 singles in the longest match of the day. Dulac took a 6-2 6-1 nod at No. 1 singles with Schulz knocking out a 6-1 6-0 victory in the No. 2 slot. Gerndt prevailed at love and love in No. 4 singles while Kawabata and Jones lost only a combined three games in convincing wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
The Hilltopper men will be idle on Wednesday before closing out their Spring Break trip with a 4:30 p.m. match against Michigan Tech on Thursday.
