WINCHESTER, Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team rolled to a 5-2 win against Shepherd here Saturday night in a non-conference match at the Winchester (Va.) Country Club.
Coach Ron Hulewicz's Hilltoppers (1-1) won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and posted straight-set win in four of the six singles matches to pull away from the Rams (1-3).
Anton Schulz and
Akira Kawabata breezed to 6-0 6-0 shutout wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, respectively, for the Black and Gold.
Gianluca Gerndt notched a 6-0 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles and
Zarion Jones dominated at No. 4 singles with a 6-1 6-0 triumph.
Florent Dulac and
Joris Gravoulet teamed up for the win at No. 1 doubles, pulling out a 7-5 victory in the tiebreaker after battling to a 6-6 tie with Shepherd's No. 1 doubles tandem.
The Hilltoppers had an easier time of it in the other two doubles matches. Gerndt and Kawabata took a 6-4 decision at No. 2 doubles while Schulz and Jones combined for a 6-1 win in the No. 3 slot.
The West Liberty men open Mountain East Conference play on Friday with a 4 p.m. match at Concord.
