Box Score 2 WESTFIELD, Ind. – The West Liberty University softball team split its two games at the Midwest Regional Crossover here Saturday at the Grand Park Complex.
Coach
Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (2-1) breezed to a 6-2 win against Ohio Dominican (2-5) in the morning but saw No. 10-ranked Indianapolis (7-2) come from behind for a 13-2 victory in the final game of the day.
In the morning game,
Katie Beeman went 4-for-4 while
Kat Donzella homered and drove in three runs as the Hilltoppers steamrolled past the Panthers (2-5).
Beeman scored two runs and drove in another while lacing out three singles and a triple. Donzella broke the scoring ice with an RBI single in the first and helped break the game open with a two-run blast in the third.
Conner Assif added a triple, single and RBI while
Haley Collett chipped in with a double and triple.
Annie Paterson pitched into the fifth to earn the win in the circle and
Taylor Bonnett followed with an inning of scoreless relief.
Makenzie Amend came on with two out in the sixth to earn the save, walking the first batter she faced and then closing up shop with four straight strikeouts.
West Liberty carried a 2-0 lead into the second inning of the afternoon game but saw their bats go cold as the nationally-ranked Greyhounds rolled out the heavy artillery.
The Hilltoppers were held hitless after the first inning while Indianapolis went to work at the plate. The Greyhounds tied the game with two runs in the second and took the lead for good with another two runs in the third. After pushing the lead to 5-2 with a single tally in the top of the fourth, Indianapolis invoked the mercy rule with an 8-run uprising in the fifth.
Donzella had a first-inning single and came around to score on
Laral Saunders' two-out, two-run single, which accounted for all of the Hilltoppers' offense in the game.
West Liberty closes out the Midwest Crossover on Sunday with games against Northwood (Mich.) and Southern Indiana.
