BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's basketball rolled to its 11th straight win here Saturday with a 97-67 revenge pasting of West Virginia Wesleyan at Rockefeller Arena.
Coach
Ben Howlett's Hilltoppers (17-3, 11-2) knocked down 17 3-pointers and shot a blistering 71 percent (22-of-31) from the floor in the second half in blasting the Bobcats (7-13, 6-8).
It was sweet revenge for the Black and Gold, who had seen Wesleyan pull off a 94-91 upset win in December by shooting 80 percent from the floor in the second half and draining a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The hosts took advantage of some cold West Liberty shooting to keep things close and were still in a one-possession game, 47-45, after a Dusan Vicentic basket with 12:39 to play.
That's when the Hilltoppers turned up the heat at both ends.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from
Luke Dyer and
Will Yoakum ignited one of the Black and Gold's trademark "blackouts." A combination of turnovers and missed shots kept the Bobcats off the board for the next three minutes while the points mounted up quickly on the WLU side of the ledger.
A
Dalton Bolon 3-pointer capped a 19-0 spurt at the 9:23 mark and the visitors had all but put the game on ice, 66-45. West Virginia Wesleyan never threatened again as the Hilltoppers rode their 64-point second half to a 30-point win.
Yoakum finished with a game-high 20 points while Pat Robinson added 18 tallies off the bench and Bolon posted his fifth consecutive double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Malik McKinney rounded out the double-figure scorers with 14 points.
Luka Petrovic had a strong game for the Bobcats with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Vicentic and Daylin Lee added 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The surging Hilltoppers face another Mountain East Conference road test on Wednesday when they head to Institute to take on West Virginia State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Walker Convocation Center.
