Box Score 2 CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The West Liberty University volleyball team split its final two matches here Saturday afternoon at the Vulcan Invitational on the campus of California (Pa.) University.
Coach
Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (4-4) dropped a 3-1 decision to host California in the opening match but rebounded with a 3-0 shutout of Indiana (Pa.) in the last match of the day.
In the opener against the Vulcans (4-3), WLU got off to a good start with a 25-19 win in the opening set but the hosts swept the next three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-22 to close out the win.
Freshman
Kirsten Bogunovich made a run at a triple-double with 16 assists, 9 digs and 8 kills for the Hilltoppers while
Madison Clayton had a team-high 10 kills and
Caitlin Clarke added 9 more. Mackenzie Daub had 8 kills and 5 blocks and
Olivia Baumhoer had 8 kills and 3 blocks with
Alissa Dickson contributing 8 kills and 7 digs.
Renee Lemke had a team-high 28 assists while
Kailee Cunningham and
Jo Lyn Jurek finished with 25 and 17 digs, respectively.
West Liberty came from behind to pull out a 26-24 decision in the first set of the IUP match and never looked back, polishing off the Crimson Hawks (1-6) by scores of 25-17 and 25-11 to complete a 3-1 run through the weekend event.
Clarke led all players with a match-high 14 kills while Dickson checked in with a double-double of 11 kills and 16 digs.
Kendall Souder also posted a double-double of 18 assists and 11 digs.
Cunningham once more led the team with 25 digs, moving ever closer to the school's all-time record. Lemke had a team-high 22 assists while Jurek added 14 digs. Cunningham's 50 digs on the afternoon pushed her career total to 2,084.
Courtney Pyeritz (2012-15) is the Hilltoppers' all-time leader with 2,155 career digs.
The West Liberty women welcome Alderson-Broaddus to the ASRC on Tuesday for their first home match of the season. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
