BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – The No. 4-seeded West Liberty University men's tennis team breezed to a 4-0 shutout of No. 5 seed Concord here Friday in a Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinal at the Huntington Tennis Club.
Coach
Sam McCullough's youthful Hilltoppers dominated the Mountain Lions from the start in Friday's quarterfinal matchup.
Anton Schulz and
Maurits Smit wrapped up a 6-1 win against Concord's Javier Lietor and Alfonso Jimenez at No. 2 doubles minutes before the No. 3 doubles tandem of
Nash Morris and
Akira Kawabata clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win against Adam Tolliver and Marty Puig.
The Hilltoppers' No. 1 doubles team of
Camilo Moncayo and
Joris Gravoulet had a 5-3 lead over the Mountain Lions' Adam Katona and Luis Soares when their match was halted.
Schulz once again got WLU off to a flying start when singles play commenced, losing only one game in rolling to a 6-1 6-0 victory against Soares at No. 3 singles.
Smit followed with a 6-2 6-4 win against Lietor at No. 4 singles before Moncayo ended the match with a 7-5 6-0 romp past Katona at No. 1 singles.
The West Liberty men will take on top-seeded and regionally-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan in Saturday's 11 a.m. semifinal.
