WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team posted its fourth Mountain East Conference shutout of the season on Wednesday with a 7-0 blanking of Shepherd at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
It was the fourth win in the last five matches for Coach
Sam McCullough's youthful Hilltoppers (6-6, 4-1) but the short-handed Rams (1-7, 0-3) didn't go down without a fight.
The Black and Gold took the doubles point with ease as Shepherd was forced to default the No. 3 doubles match and WLU's No. 2 tandem of
Anton Schulz and Mauk Smit didn't lose a game in a 6-0 rout.
Camilo Moncayo and
Joris Gravoulet completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 nod in the No. 1 slot.
The visitors were much more competitive in singles play as Moncayo and Gravoulet had their hands full in the top two singles matches.
Moncayo traded 6-3 wins with Carter Davis in the first two sets of their No. 1 singles tilt and fought off a late surge to claim a 10-8 nod in the superbreaker.
Gravoulet had to dig himself out of a hole after dropping a 6-4 verdict to Evan Dokken in the first set of their No. 2 singles match. Gravoulet fought back to square the match with a 7-5 win in the second set before prevailing, 10-6, in the superbreaker.
Schulz, Smit and
Akira Kawabata swept their singles matches by identical 6-0 6-0 scores.
The West Liberty men head to Cedarville (Ohio) on Thursday for a 3 p.m. non-conference match.
