WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team battled Fairmont State to the wire here Thursday only to come up short in a 4-3 loss at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (9-8, 4-2) lost the doubles point and that turned out to be the deciding factor as the Falcons (6-8, 3-2) earned a split of the six singles matches to walk away with the win.
Anton Schulz and Mauk Smit earned a 6-4 win for West Liberty at No. 2 doubles but Fairmont took a 6-0 nod at No. 3 doubles and pulled out a narrow 7-5 decision at No. 1 doubles to claim the crucial doubles point.
Schulz, Smit and
Joris Gravoulet picked up singles wins for the hosts but the Falcons took straight-set nods at No. 1 singles and the Nos. 5 and 6 slots to seal the deal.
The West Liberty men will be back on the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex courts Saturday afternoon when they host the University of Charleston in a 1 p.m. match.
