HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team came out on the short end of a 5-2 count against Catawba (N.C.) here Wednesday in a morning match at the Spring Tennis Fest.
Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (1-3) got off to a good start, taking two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, but the Indians (7-2) came on strong in singles play to take the win.
Anton Schulz and
Maurits Smit teamed up to give West Liberty a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles and
Akira Kawabata and
Nash Morris duplicated that feat with a 6-3 nod at No. 3 doubles.
Camilo Moncayo impressed with a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles, taking the first set in a tiebreaker before rolling to a 6-3 win in the second set.
That's when Catawba's depth began to make its presence felt as the veteran Indians won the remaining five singles matches to take the match. Schulz lost a heartbreaker at No. 3 singles, trading a pair of 6-2 wins in the first two sets with Catawba's Ryan Reid only to see Reid prevail by a 10-6 count at the end.
The Hilltoppers wrap up their Spring Break trip on Thursday with a noon match against Barton (N.C.) before heading back home.
