HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 12-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic on Monday as play continued in the annual Spring Tennis Fest at Hilton Head.
Coach
Sam McCullough's youthful Hilltoppers got a win at No. 3 doubles only to see the nationally-ranked Sailfish prevail at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point. Palm Beach Atlantic then swept all six singles matches to finish off the win.
Highlighting the day for the Black and Gold was the win by the No. 3 doubles tandem of
Akira Kawabata and
Nash Morris. The freshman duo battled their Sailfish foes to a 6-6 deadlock before pulling away to a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker.
Morris also made his presence felt in singles play, taking a 6-3 nod in the first set of his No. 6 singles match with Joao Vellosso. The Palm Beach Atlantic player evened the match with a 6-2 win in the second set before taking the nod with a 10-5 edge in the tiebreaker.
The West Liberty men return to action on Tuesday morning when they take on Tiffin (Ohio) in an 8:30 a.m. match.
