3 Big Wins for WLU Men's Tennis

Men's Tennis | 3/30/2019 8:23:00 PM

| Box Score 3     The West Liberty University men's tennis team finished off a big southern road trip in impressive fashion on Saturday with a pair of impressive Mountain East Conference wins.
Coach Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (5-6, 3-1) hung a 7-0 loss on UVa-Wise in a morning match before making the 2-hour drive to Concord for a 7-0 whitewash of the Mountain Lions.
Saturday's wins came on the heels of a 7-0 shutout win at West Virginia State on Friday. Following the West Virginia State win, the Hilltoppers drove to Bluefield State and dropped a 5-0 decision to the defending Atlantic Region champions.
The Black and Gold made quick work of Saturday's morning match at UVa-Wise, sweeping all three doubles matches and posting convincing straight-set wins in the six singles matches.
Camilo Moncayo and Joris Gravoulet coasted to a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles with Anton Schulz teaming up with Mauk Smit for a 6-0 shutout at the No. 2 spot. Akira Kawabata and Nash Morris also chalked up a 6-0 win at No 3 doubles.
The Hilltoppers were never threatened in singles play with Moncayo and Smit posting back-to-back 6-0 shutouts in their wins.
It was more of the same after Coach McCullough and his youthful squad arrived in Athens on Saturday afternoon. Once again, West Liberty swept the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play and didn't drop a set in posting their third MEC sweep in less than 24 hours.
Gravoulet and Moncayo were pushed a bit at No. 1 doubles before closing out a 7-5 win against the Mountain Lions' Alfonso Jimenez and Adam Katona but Schulz and Smit pitched another 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles with Kawabata and Morris prevailing, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot.
Smit picked up his second 6-0 6-0 win of the day at No. 5 singles while Schulz and Morris dropped only two games in their straight-set wins.
On Friday, the Hilltoppers swept all three doubles matches at Institute and never looked back in spoiling the MEC debut for the host Yellow Jackets.
The only close calls for WLU came at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles. Moncayo and Gravoulet won a tiebreaker to claim victory at No. 1 doubles while Moncayo survived a marathon 12-10 superbreaker in his No. 1 singles match against Ryan Mullins after splitting the first two sets.
Schulz and Smit teamed up on a 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles before going on to straight-set wins in singles play. Kawabata and Morris did the same, rolling to a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles and posting straight-set wins in their singles matches.
Later that afternoon, Bluefield State's defending Atlantic Region champions took advantage of a young WLU team playing its second match of the day after a 2-hour drive by breezing to a 5-0 win.
The Big Blues posted wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point. Schulz and Smit were deadlocked at 4-4 in their No. 2 doubles match when play was halted.
Bluefield State wrapped things up in singles action with straight-set wins at Nos, 1, 2, 5 and 6 singles. The perennial Atlantic Region power was also leading at Nos. 3 and 4 when the match ended.
