WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan here Wednesday in a mutual Mountain East Conference opener at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Sam McCullough's youthful Hilltoppers (2-5, 0-1) lost the doubles point by the slimmest of margins and couldn't break through in singles play against the more experienced Bobcats (4-5, 1-0).
Wesleyan picked up a win at No. 1 doubles but West Liberty had a chance to earn the doubles point when the Hilltoppers carried the No. 2 and No. 3 matches into tiebreakers. Unfortunately for the hosts, the Bobcats prevailed in both tiebreakers to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
The visitors claimed straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches. West Liberty's
Anton Schulz rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the first set of his No. 3 singles match against Alex Lyudinovskiy to even the match with a 6-4 nod in the second set. That forced the match into a superbreaker with the Wesleyan junior prevailing by a 10-4 count.
The Hilltoppers hit the road on Friday for a 4 p.m. match at West Virginia State.
