INDIANA, Pa. – The No. 9-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team takes on defending Atlantic Region champion East Stroudsburg (Pa.) this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament.
Tipoff between the No. 2 seeded Black and Gold (26-4) and the No. 7 seeded Warriors (21-7) is set for 2:30 p.m. at the 4,000-seat Kovalchick Convention and Athletics Center on the campus of Indiana (Pa.) University.
It's the 10th consecutive regional appearance for Coach
Ben Howlett's two-time defending Mountain East Conference champion Hilltoppers, who have won 5 of the last 8 regional titles and posted an eye-popping 19-4 mark in Atlantic Region play over the past 9 seasons.
Don't look for East Stroudsburg to be intimidated as Coach Jeff Wilson's Warriors are coming off the first NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance in school history a year ago. East Stroudsburg is no stranger to NCAA Tournament play, compiling a 6-6 mark in its six previous NCAA Tourney trips.
This will be the fifth time WLU and the Warriors have collided on the hardwood with West Liberty having won three of the previous four matchups – including a 2-0 mark in Atlantic Region action.
The Hilltoppers handed ESU a 119-82 setback in a 2012 regional quarterfinal at the ASRC and claimed an 89-82 win in the 2014 regional final hosted by East Stroudsburg.
The West Liberty/ESU winner advances to Sunday's 5 p.m. regional semifinal against the winner of Saturday's first quarterfinal between No. 3 seed Virginia State (27-4), the CIAA regular-season and tournament champion, and No. 6 seed Notre Dame (23-8), which upset the Hilltoppers in the MEC Tournament championship game to earn the league's automatic bid.
