GLENVILLE, W.Va. – No. 21-ranked Glenville State held off a late charge by the West Liberty University women's team here Saturday and snapped WLU's 9-game winning streak with a 112-99 victory at the Waco Center.
Coach
Kyle Cooper's Hilltoppers (18-8, 15-5) struggled with Glenville's defensive pressure for much of the first half as the Pioneers (24-2, 19-1) came out of the locker room clicking on all cylinders.
Glenville shot better than 60 percent from the floor and forced West Liberty into 19 first-half turnovers while jetting out to a seemingly-insurmountable 62-37 halftime lead.
The Hilltoppers came storming back in the second half. With
Marissa Brown working the paint and
Morgan Brunner bombing away from the perimeter, the visitors pulled within striking distance, 77-67, heading into the fourth quarter.
West Liberty opened the final period on a 13-3 run – capped by a
Taylor Johnson 3-pointer – to make it a one-possession game, 80-77, with 6:39 to play.
Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, that was as close as they could come as the Pioneers reeled off seven straight points to restore their double-digit lead and held WLU at bay the rest of the way.
Brown, who was forced to sit out most of the second quarter due to foul trouble, came on strong to finish with 29 points and 11 rebounds on 14-of-17 shooting from the floor.
Brunner knocked down a career-high 26 points, including 5 3-pointers and a 7-for-7 afternoon at the charity stripe, while
Brandi Beader and Johnson added 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Re'Shawna Stone's 24 points paced five double-figure scorers for the Pioneers as the MEC champions won their 14th straight.
The Lady Hilltoppers will try to start another winning streak on Wednesday when they close out their home schedule with a 5:30 p.m. game against Notre Dame at the ASRC.
