WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The No. 8-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team will host Fairmont State here Saturday afternoon in a battle for sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference.
The game has been selected for nationwide distribution as part of the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase and is set for a 4:05 p.m. tipoff at the ASRC with the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase crew of Neil Harwell and Rich Zvosec on the call.
The MEC showdown has been picked up for a live regional telecast on AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh and will be streamed live on WVMetroNews.com and MountainEast.tv with links available on the athletics websites for West Liberty University (
www.hilltoppersports.com) and Fairmont State University (
www.fightingfalcons.com).
Basketball fans from coast to coast will be able to view the live streaming telecast on such NCAA social media accounts as Division II Twitter (@NCAADII), Division II Facebook (facebook.com/ncaadivisionii) and the Division II Periscope app (@NCAADII). Closer to home, the Facebook pages for West Liberty Athletics and Fairmont State Athletics will also carry live streams.
Cox Sports TV, with multiple broadcast affiliates from Rhode Island to California, has also signed on to carry tape-delay telecasts of both games on Sunday and Monday.
Coach
Ben Howlett's Hilltoppers (16-2, 12-1) will be looking to avenge their only MEC loss of the season, a 106-104 heartbreaker in Fairmont on Dec. 9 when the Falcons' Jason Jolly banked in a running jumper just ahead of the final horn.
West Liberty has reeled off nine straight wins since that disappointing setback and is coming off a hard-fought 84-76 victory at Shepherd on Wednesday night. Sophomore guard
Dalton Bolon scored 20 of his game-high 23 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to spark the Black and Gold.
Fairmont State (15-4, 12-1) has won 7 of its last 8 games after breezing to an 88-64 rout of Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday. Vonte Montgomery had 22 points and 11 rebounds to pace four double-figure scorers for Coach Joe Mazzulla's squad.
