ELKINS, W.Va. – The No. 14-ranked West Liberty University men forced 25 turnovers and drained 14 3-pointers here Saturday in running away to a 103-73 victory against Davis & Elkins at the McDonnell Center.
Coach
Ben Howlett's Hilltoppers (6-2, 3-1) used a 13-2 burst to open up a double-figure lead midway through the first half and the Senators (4-5, 2-2) never got the margin into single digits the rest of the night.
West Liberty's full-court pressing defense drove the tempo and created multiple scoring opportunities as WLU topped the century mark for the fifth time this season.
The Hilltoppers pushed the lead out to 38-20 on a conventional 3-point play by
Marlon Moore Jr. at 5:42 of the opening half before settling for a 52-37 advantage at the break.
The lead hit 30 points, 87-56, on a 3-point bomb by
Pat Robinson III as the clock ticked under the 8-minute mark and the margin stayed in that range the rest of the way.
Robinson led the Black and Gold scoring parade with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists while
Will Yoakum added 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
True freshman
Bryce Butler donated 16 points off the bench,
Dalton Bolon finished with 14 points and a team-high 9 rebounds and
Luke Dyer added a dozen points on a career-high 4-for-5 showing from the 3-point arc.
Junior guard
Preston Boswell made a run at a triple double with 10 points, a WLU season-high 9 assists, 6 rebounds and a pair of steals.
Davis & Elkins got 21 points from Myles Monroe and 18 more from Donte Doleman.
The West Liberty men will be back on the road Wednesday night for an important early-season MEC test at the University of Charleston. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Wehrle Center.
