Urbana Women Steal 2-1 Win at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Urbana scored two late goals in a 3-minute span late in the second half here Wednesday night to steal a 2-1 come-from-behind victory from a frustrated West Liberty University women's team at the West Family Athletic Complex.
Coach Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (2-6-2, 2-3-2) had dominated play for most of the evening only to come away with another disappointing setback against the Blue Knights (5-4-0, 5-2-0), who had defeated WLU in an earlier meeting and took over first place in the Mountain East Conference North Division with Wednesday's win.
West Liberty controlled the run of play for most of the night, including a dominant first half that saw the Black and Gold outshoot Urbana by a 9-2 margin and earn 6 corner kicks to zero for the Ohio squad.
The Hilltoppers' constant pressure paid off midway through the frame when Layne Hartnell leaped high to nod home a header in the 25th minute and West Liberty carried that 1-0 lead into intermission.
The hosts had several chances to add to the lead during the early part of the second half but Urbana keeper Hazel Sans made several quality saves and the Hilltoppers misfired on other opportunities to pad the margin.
Urbana's Alyssa Edwards delivered the equalizer in the 74th minute when she launched a heavy 20-yard drive from the left wing that slammed into the crossbar at the top right corner of the goal, bounced into the right upright and deflected backward into the net.
The game-winner came in the 77th minute on a Jordin Littles shot that was partially blocked by a WLU defender but had just enough behind it to trickle across the goal line before the defense could recover.
West Liberty finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks. Claire Valentine had 4 saves on the night for WLU while Sans stopped 6 shots by the Hilltoppers.
The Lady Hilltoppers will try to get back on track Sunday when they host the University of Charleston in a 3:30 p.m. match at the West Family Athletic Complex.
