WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Montgomery came up big with a career-high 10 saves here Sunday and the West Liberty University women's soccer team battled Charleston to a scoreless draw at the West Family Athletic Complex.
Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (2-6-3, 2-3-3) spent most of the afternoon on the defensive against an aggressive flock of Golden Eagles (5-5-1, 3-3-1) but kept the visitors off the scoreboard through full time and a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions to earn the point.
Most of the match was played on West Liberty's end of the pitch as UC launched a barrage of 14 shots at the Black and Gold net – putting 10 of them on frame – while the hosts were held to just two shots over the course of the afternoon.
Working well with her talented back line, Montgomery was charted with 7 saves during regular time, added another in the first extra period and stopped two more shots in the final frame to earn her second consecutive shutout and fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Hilltoppers didn't get their first shot of the match until the 75th minute when
Sonata Beasley sent one high over the crossbar.
Lexie Mullen put a shot on frame for the hosts in the 94th minute but Charleston keeper Kaylee Hensley made the save to preserve her own shutout.
The West Liberty women return to the West Family Athletic Complex on Sunday to host Mountain East Conference North Division leader Fairmont State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
