Box Score     BECKLEY, W.Va. – Timothe TranVan's goal with just 15 seconds remaining in the first half here Sunday snapped a 1-1 tie and propelled the West Liberty men's soccer team to its second straight win with a 2-1 victory over Concord.
The Mountain East Conference match was played in Beckley as heavy rains in southern West Virginia had rendered the Mountain Lions' on-campus field unplayable.
In just their second season as a varsity program, Coach Sean Regan's resurgent Hilltoppers (3-11-1, 3-9-1) earned the first road win in the university's brief NCAA Division II history but it didn't come easily in a physical contest that saw the teams combine for 26 fouls and 5 yellow cards.
West Liberty drew first blood when Bernardo Vilchis was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Vilchis slammed it home in the 21st minute, extending his school-record goal-scoring streak to four consecutive games.
Concord (2-9-2, 1-9-2) equalized in the 35th minute when Daniel Culverwell finished off an assist from Michael Shelor to forge a 1-1 tie but the Hilltoppers weren't finished.
Heavy offensive pressure from West Liberty created several scoring chances in the waning minutes of the opening half and TranVan capitalized with a smoking drive off a direct kick that beat Mountain Lion netminder Kyle Brown low to the right side late in the 45th minute.
Concord kept play in West Liberty's end for long stretches in the second half, outshooting the Hilltoppers by a 13-4 margin in the final 45 minutes, but couldn't get the ball past WLU keeper Noah Underwood.
The Black and Gold dodged a bullet in the 80th minute with a shot by Ben Greear hit the right post and bounced away. Concord's Adrian Cabello tried to put away the rebound but Underwood made a diving save to preserve the one-goal lead.
The Mountain Lions finished the match with a 20-13 advantage in shots but Underwood was up to the challenge, charting a total of 8 saves to collect the hard-earned win.
The WLU men close out their home schedule on Nov. 3 when they host West Virginia Wesleyan in a 1 p.m. match at the West Family Athletic Complex.
