Hilltoppers Notch Revenge Win in Maryland

FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team came storming back from an early deficit here Wednesday night and pulled away to a 4-2 revenge win against Frostburg State in Mountain East Conference action at Bobcat Stadium.
Coach Sean Regan's Hilltoppers (2-11-1, 2-9-1) carried a 3-2 lead into halftime and held the Bobcats (6-7-1, 5-6-1) scoreless over the final 45 minutes to avenge an early-season 3-0 shutout loss to the Maryland squad at West Family Stadium.
The teams combined for a total of 30 shots in an up-tempo contest but it was the Black and Gold that had the better of play for much of the evening.
West Liberty scored first when Mikel Ubeda took a pass from Tom Humphreys and tucked a shot just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Frostburg equalized in the 27th minute on a penalty kick by Jose Rodriguez and took a 2-1 lead just 90 seconds later when Randy Putnam got one past Hilltopper netminder Jorn Hocter.
Regan's visitors never blinked as Timothe TranVan set up Zak Campbell for the game-tying goal in the 31st minute and Ubeda put WLU ahead to stay, 3-2, with his second goal of the half off a Tyler Swafford assist in the 35th minute.
The Hilltoppers carried that 3-2 lead into intermission and came out strong when play resumed in the second half. West Liberty created several good scoring chances in the early minutes of the period and it paid off in the 50th minute. That's when Bernardo Vilchis won possession of a throw-in just outside the 6, whiffed on a quick volley attempt and then whistled one into the back of the net for a crucial insurance tally.
Both teams had opportunities over the final 40 minutes but couldn't finish and the Black and Gold walked away with their first road win of the season.
Ubeda made history as the first West Liberty player with multiple goals in an NCAA Division II game while Hocter finished with seven saves to earn his second win of the year.
The Hilltoppers head south on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. match at Concord.
