WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team breezed to a 7-0 victory against Grove City (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex in the first dual match of the season for both squads.
Coach
Sam McCullough's youthful Hilltoppers didn't drop a set in shutting out the Wolverines, who were coming off a runner-up finish in last year's Presidents Athletic Conference championships.
Two-time All-MEC senior
Camilo Moncayo – West Liberty's only returning letterman – teamed with freshman
Jorn Gravoulet for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles while sophomore transfer
Anton Schulz combined with freshman
Nash Morris for a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. The freshman duo of
Akira Kawabata and
Maurits Smit completed the doubles point with a 6-0 shutout at the No. 3 spot.
Moncayo, Gravoulet, Schulz, Smit, Kawabata and Morris all posted straight-set wins in singles play to finish off the match.
The Hilltoppers will be idle until Sept. 21 when they travel to Charleston, W.Va. to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional.
