CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team battled California (Pa.) into double-overtime here Thursday only to come out on the short end of a 1-0 score in a mutual season opener.
    The Vulcans' Zana Ross finished off a pass from Kiley Austin in the 103rd minute to snap the scoreless tie. California held off the Lady Hilltoppers the rest of the way to claim the victory.
    The Black and Gold dominated the run of play throughout but were unable to finish several promising scoring chances.
    West Liberty held a whopping 19-9 advantage in shots while forcing 9 corner kicks to just 3 corners from the Vulcans.
    California keeper Gianna Sinatra was the star of the match for the hosts with 7 saves while Lauren Hartnell had 2 saves in net for the Hilltoppers.
    West Liberty returns home on Saturday to host Davis & Elkins. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
